Fiber artist: Mieke Apps
This month’s featured artist brings a new dimension to Just Imagine. Not only is Mieke Apps talented, she is delightful. I met Mieke last week when she brought in a few of her amazing, boldly colourful and perfectly executed fiber art pieces. It didn’t take long for us to display her work!
Mieke first became known in New Zealand as a nationally acclaimed weaver. Born in Hoorn, a small picturesque town in the north of Holland, she attended the Amsterdam School of Applied Textile Arts.
During the 15 years in which she specialized in weaving, Mieke won numerous awards and commissions throughout New Zealand, Australia. America , China and Europe. As a Putaruru resident, she tutored a group of young people in her art and they, too, have gone on to win accolades and awards!
In 1988 Mieke changed her artistic direction developing expertise and finess in machine pieced and machine embroidered and quilted works. As should be expected, Mieke has achieved much recognition for her creations.
Her rapport with colour is exciting. She brings contemporary use of colour to design and her background in weaving gives a special perspective to her fabric art offering a new dimension to this creative discipline.
Mieke and her New Zealand born husband Grame now live in Kerikeri, where she credits the rugged sea views, bush, native birds and untouched nature as artistically inspirational.
She is obviously both inspired and inspirational. Mieke has been featured in several publications including: NZ Quilter, Patchwork and Quilting Diary, the Vogue Nihon Exhibition Catalogue, the covers of The Quilt, Beauty in Fabric and Thread and NZ Quilter as well as most recently (2006) a featured artist in studio in Stich Book.
